First Ever Cake Contest!

I finally had the chance to be involved in a cake contest. While I was back in the states I went to a cake contest/ show and it was so powerful. I got such influence and great inspiration from those cakes. Well, you could only imagine how excited I was when I heard there was going to be a cake contest in my area. The cake contest was going to be the weekend that I got back from California. I would have 2 days to fly in to Oki, bake a cake, color all my fondant, cover and ice my cake, then make all the detail work for my cake. It was crazy! However, I was up for the challenge, and mentally prepared.

The week came that I was flying home to Oki and I needed to start in on my cake. I made a chocolate cake with strawberry chocolate buttercream icing and filling. It didn't really taste as great as I wanted it too, but it would have to do because I didn't have time to change it. My idea was "Under the Sea". I was thinking mermaid, fish and tons of coral....

Ok so the contest was judged by how you decorate your cake and also taste. I knew I wasn't going to win taste over, so I needed to win decoration! Well, you had to decorate at the show and had an hour to do so... heres the progress shots, and the final outcome....

Its Bath Time!

Hey everyone, I know I haven't been keeping up with this blog lately, but I AM BACK! Ok so heres why.

I left for the states in mid February to go see family! My cousin was getting married, my mother was missing me, my sister and I needed to catch up, and most of all I needed to be in CALI for awhile! I needed the vacation just as much as my mother Elizabeth did, and everyone else who took me in and hangout with me in the time that I spent out there. If I can I'll upload some photos from my trip, so you all believe me!

Well, of course when you go back to your home town everyone wants to see you! However, everyone wanted to see what cake I was going to make! My old supervisor at my old job in California, was having a baby and my best friend was throwing a surprise party. So guess what I made, yep thats right, THE CAKE! Who would have thought. The theme was ducks, and she was expecting a baby boy so blue was definetly essential. Well, anyways without further ado here it is the Bath Time Cake:

This is when I first made it. It is not on the cake, but this is the only picture I had that shows the detail work on the towl.

God Made Cake's Very Special!

I had an order for a simple girls birthday cake. It was to be veggie tale themed! I had a blast making this cake because it was simple yet really cute. I was so excited to hand it over to my customer. The characters were made out of fondant.

I wanted the sides to be girlie but not to girlie, so I went with a simple dot and swirl design.

I like how this cake was simple and not really busy with characters and patterns. I really enjoyed making it!

Did Someone Say Sesame Street?

I had a very busy weekend just awhile back and on one day I had this huge order for just one person to make. It was just overwhelming and I think I slept for a week straight after I was done! I had an order for a three tiered sesame/Elmo cake. She also ordered twp smash cakes for the twins to have. On top of those 5 cakes, she also ordered 12 Elmo cupcakes, and 15 cookie monster cupcakes! It was so much icing, cake, fondant, and cupcakes I think my head was spinning! Well, after all my hard work this was the out come, and I must say I was kind of shocked at how well it came together.

The smash cakes had toppers that would be too big for the traditional "Happy Birthday (Name)" to fit on the cake. So, we came up with the idea of putting their names on the sesame street sign! I think it came together well. We also agreed to make the cakes two different colors so the twin boys felt like they were special, and had their very own unique cake.

Together they looked so cute... I really liked the smash cakes when they were finally all together!

This is the front view... this was a lot of detail that took me a few days to cut out and a few days to put all together.

The finished product was just so satisfying to look at I almost wanted to sit around and see all her guests reactions! I just had so much fun, but after I was done and headed back home all I could think was "how did i finish that in time?"

1st Wedding Anniversary

My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary at the beginning of this year! It was a weekend full of wonderful surprises! I even found time to make our special anniversary cake!

And my hat, but my hats not finished yet. Since I am a girl my hat needs to look like Minnie Mouses. So, whats missing? That's right the bow!

This was a lot of fun to make, but I do need to work on the ears a little more. I need to find a way to make them a little stronger. They kind of turned into floppy ears after a few hours... I'll have to practice this cake again sometime soon! But it sure was a lot of fun to make.

Oh and my husband loved it...

Its Been Awhile, But Here You Go!

Alright, this has to be probably the longest period of time I have not been able to write a blog. I have been preparing to head back tot he states to see family, and my cousin get married, but because I'm leaving soon I just can't seem to find the time or energy to do this blog. Finally though, I have found the time, and without further a do....

In December I was throwing a Christmas Party and wanted to have something visual to view while I was cooking and not being a great host. Well, it was Christmas time and what house is complete without an at home hand made gingerbread house. So, I decided it would a lot of fun to make a gingerbread house from scratch. I made the dough, then cut each piece out by hand, then decorated it by hand. It was a challenge but I really liked the final outcome!

These are the side, back, and front shots of the details.

The gingerbread pathway was a huge gingerbread piece about 8 inches in length. It was decorated to look like a rock pathway.

After the Christmas holiday passed, the new year was upon us all. My bakery was a little slow due to everyone enjoying the special holidays with their families. So, I had a few days to have some cupcake fun! I made these mini cupcakes and decorated them with all sorts of fondant items.

My favorite part of being in Japan is the Cherry Blossoms. I was finally able to view them up close and in person this month at the cherry blossom festival and well, because I love them so much I had to make a cupcake with one on them!

I also like when the plain butterfly is put on a colorful cupcake! It would make a perfect girls baby shower sweet treat!

After a while of searching the itnernet a million times over for a great whip cream recipe I was finally able to find something that came to my appeal. This is a chocolate cake two layered with melted chocolate in the middle.

I then had a ton of left over batter and whip cream frosting so i decided to decorate a million different cupcakes. Take a look at some mouth watering cupcakes... I warned you...

Plain cupcakes... or decorated with drizzled melted chocolate...

I can always go with a chocolate cupcake, melted chocolate topped with chocolate whip cream!

How about some sprinkles to give them a little color?

Or even better topped with a Hershey's kiss, for all the loved ones out there!

The Jungle Has Gone..... Cute?

The jungle cake was done awhile back, but with the many holidays I just haven't found the time to post this cute little cake up here. Well, lets see the cake first before we talk about how really cute it is!!!!

This cake was a lot of fun. I enjoyed making each animal and gave each one a little different personality when I created them. The giraffe was a little bit of a challenge to get him to stand without falling over. He even had a day where is neck kept falling off... eventually it was repaired and he was put back together. He came out almost my favorite. The hippo was the starting animal that I fell in love with. He was large and really cute. However, when I finally put stripes on the zebra, he became the winning one. I loved the way the zebra turned out. At first he was cute but wasn't really cute cute. Eventually, he grew on me well then I put his stripes on and fell in love with the little guy. The alligator was fun, along with my overly full monkey. The bird wasn't anything crazy, but the turtle took some time and detail work. In the end the baby was a new one for me and I liked how she came out. Its like all you want to do is hold the little on in your hand and just keep her forever. Well anyways, if you couldn't tell this was by far my favorite cake to date. It really was a lot of fun to create and I had a lot of internet ideas and help.

Firetruck #2

This time it was for a Junior Firefighter!!! I have to say the more I do one type of cake, the better I get. You probably can't tell that much in this photo but the color red looks more maroon then red. The reason is, I RAN OUT OF RED!!!! Yes that's right I had to make red, and those of you who have never had to make red, its like impossible! so enough talk lets get to the photos:

I love the detail on this truck a little better. I like how the hose is a little longer. The water is so much more colorful, and the truck has more personality I feel (maybe its all that work I put into it making the color red...who knows). Overall, I like this firetruck rampage I seem to be on... anyone else need a firetruck I'm on a role??? Enjoy!

This cake was a lot of fun because it was a white confetti cake, all carved into the shape of a firetruck. The little boy, Russell, was turning 3 and this cake was extra special just for him. His mother even emailed me back after his party to tell me that he was so excited about his cake he had to tell everyone and show him his awesome cake! Thank you Russell for letting me be a little part of your extra special cake. This was a fun and yet cute cake! I enjoyed this one a TON!

Its Been Awhile So Heres A Lot Of New Stuff!

The Holidays have arrived! Its been awhile since I've blogged, but it's been a few crazy weeks! Lets start with Halloween! I had another pumpkin cake order and this second time around I thought I did such an awesome job! It came out looking great! See for your self...

I really felt the roses came out a lot better and even adding the additional leaf and stem accents made this pumpkin cake all that much better!

After the first baby shower cake, I wasn't too sure if I ever wanted to do another... However, I got an order I just couldn't resist. The order was to make a Winnie the Pooh themed cake with a purple pink topper that welcomed the baby girl. It was a little struggle to think of what I was going to do, but after a few drawings and concept ideas I finally came up with this (well I would say little guy, but its not so little) so instead I'll say, gigantic cake!

The little details were my favorite to do, as were all the characters. This cake pushed me to the edge of creativity and I really think I achieved something beyond even what I thought I couldn't do!

That's Piglet and Pooh Bear, with a jar of honey!

This is Tigger with a jar of honey also... He was so much fun to create, and I had a little trouble painting him because he is covered in them... but in the end I really liked the results!

Mr. Rabbit, he was the only character I wasn't satisfied with. I honestly think his legs were too big, his face was too small, but everyone said he looked alright. I just think I could have done better... and had I had the time and the money too I probably would have remade this guy five times. However, he stands as he does when the day is over.

My favorite part of this cake was getting to try something I never thought I would ever get to try! Eeyore! He was always such a loving caring character who everyone felt sorry for. So, in my addition to this cake I made Eeyore the lucky one! He got a huge jar of honey, and his tail is attached! This one was my favorite to make and shockingly he only took about two hours or so! He was still a lot of fun!

Again, the detail is what made this cake... and as you can see this bee had both wings, a stinger, and yes a face with two eyes and a smile, including all the stripes which were hand painted!

This is the topper, the pink and purple topper with a baby under a blanket. The Welcome Baby sign is all made in Royal icing. The Baby and blanket are made from fondant and are hand painted. Overall, the cake was too much fun, and it was one cake I wish I didn't let go of. I wanted to keep it forever. This wasn't my only cake order for that weekend, I still had another cake for a one year old birthday to do.

This cake was a huge challenge in the sense that the topper in this picture was not the original, and the name broke three times until the last one was dropped off at the house and put together on spot. The petals and leafs on the very top hot so hot they began to re-mold themselves back to normal fondant consistency. I had a lot of problems with this cake but after several hours of re-pairing what the heat damaged I was able to make it look a lot better. Unfortunately, I did not get one last photo of the cake. This photo is of the re-construction... the final cake had a photo of the baby and her new re-made name on it. I wish I had the final photo of it, but I just didn't think about it after all the work I did on it, I was ready to just deliver it...

After a long weekend with those cakes, I needed a break, to enjoy some fun bakery items. I invited my friend and assistant Marissa over to help me make cookies... I found a sugar cookie recipe that I thought would taste good. We doubled the recipe because it said it only made 24 cookies, and we wanted to take the batter and make three different colors. Well, when we doubled the recipe and then started to color and cut out the cookies, 24 cookies started to look like a better number. The final amount of cookies was something over 100! Here's a photo of about twenty or so.

You can see the yellow, orange, and red leafs for our thanksgiving/holiday themed idea. I really was glad with the out come when I tasted the final cookie... It was really simple but the icing gave it a little something extra. I like cookies that aren't over powerful, but just cookies.... and these I liked a lot!

My husband birthday was also coming up, so I took a weekend off from taking orders to practice cakes and flavoring for my husbands birthday cake. He wanted chocolate but I wanted to try something new and different. We eventually came up on a recipe that was called chocolate peanut butter cake. Wow that sounded awesome. So I tried it out and thought it was sooo awesome. The cupcakes below are the test run of this recipe.

This is the chocolate peanut butter cake recipe with vanilla frosting, very taste. This cupcake just needed more peanut butter, soooooo....

Then I thought lets add peanut butter to the icing and see what that's like.... well the cupcakes (pictured above) were the best tasting by far! Then I got going thinking about how beautiful I wanted them to look, so I thought about melting peanut butter and placing that on top of the cupcake and icing... the out come was:

This was sooooo good it should have been served with a huge glass of milk!

The cake orders started to come in, and I still needed to make my husbands birthday cake. I wanted to make something special for him, but I ended up getting so sick I was running a fever and was put out of business for almost two days. When I started to feel better i was down to the day of my husbands birthday party to put his birthday cake together. The cake I made was the came cupcakes as you see above just in a cake form. The cake was put together in less then two hours.... this is what we call speed work:

This was the start of the cake, this was about an hour and a half in to the cake work....

This was a little less then two hours after I started and it smelled great, tasted great and all I wanted to do was eat the whole thing! Yum, yum!!!

The last order of the weekend was a new one for me. It was a strawberry cake with a vanilla frosting and a strawberry shortcake princess themed party! I did a little research on this one, but in the end I have to say this cake was all new ideas, and new tastes I have never tried before.

The strawberry shortcake is made of color flow with is a very delicate process, and need to say it broke... of course thought it was hard to see, and it still looked great! While decorating the cake I decided I wanted to try a new boarder and bottom boarder... so what did I do, I just simply started to put icing on the cake and before I knew it the cake looked so cool!!!

The close up of the color flow detail... and yes when you do color flow its all done by hand... this was color flowed, then some areas were painted by hand... It was a challenge but a great one I learned from and will never forget.

The final top of the cake, it looked great, and was simply yet wonderful. I enjoyed this cake because it took me back to my childhood... Not only that but I got to try a new strawberry cake recipe and some new hand painted art work...

I got really bored the other day...

So, I decided "I should bake!!"

I wanted to travel a little away from the usual to make my collection of cakes, and ideas a little larger... So, I thought... What could I do to really get more business...

Then i decided, after viewing a few inspiring photos, CUPCAKES!!!! I drew up some design ideas, and baked some cupcakes. Well, then I got to work on the icing, and soon after I had cupcakes!!! I made a few designs for Halloween, Christmas, and a few just because... WANT TO SEE???

3 Orders in One Weekend!!!

Oh my what a weekend! I had 3 cake order this weekend, and all I can say is OH MY!

Lets start with the suitcase cake. Yes, I know, again! Well, I have to say it has been a hit, so that one was another fun one to do! Jackie was throwing a party last minute for 4 military members who were either headed off to another base, or another squadron on base. She was last minute with her party and of course I jumped in and said of course I would do the cake for her! The suitcase had the new bases, or squadrons as the "stickers". Here's a look:

This cake was marble with my usual icing... Jackie emailed me to tell me that "The cake was wonderful. It was a BIG hit of the party! ... Thank you for all you have done for us! Jackie" I was so excited to hear it was big hit! I love to hear that the cake was a fun center piece of any party! That's why I love to do what I do! I enjoy hearing other peoples parties just became to talk of the town do to the awesome cake.. well, Jackie I would like to say thank you for giving me another chance at this very fun cake! Let me know if you need another one, I have a few new ideas for the next one. ;)

Well, I did say there was 3 orders. So on to the next one! This one was a lot of fun to create. It was a HUGE challenge but I want to thank Daniela for giving me a chance, and later a second chance to create it! So lets start from the beginning! The cake idea was a baby block for a baby shower. I was super excited because I haven't done a baby block or a baby shower cake yet! So, I was so over the top with this cake... ok well let me just show you:

It couldn't have come out better... well... then I delivered the cake... and I got the worst email any baker could get. Daniela had gotten the cake home and it started to fall apart.... weird I thought, but I looked at some of the photos she sent me and all I could think was "oh my gosh all that work and that's what happened... oh no"... I felt horrible. So, she asked me to come fix it, and when I got there it took me a minute to just take in what I saw... However, after a little work, some sweating over it, and a few good laughs... the cake looked just like new! I worked my magic (or maybe luck) and it was back up and running.

I checked in with Daniela after the party to see how the cake held up and she let me know that "... every thing went well, thank you for asking the cake looked great and she loved it and in the end I think that's all that matters, don't you think?" I agree with Daniela, the customer has to be happy. I was glad I could get down there, fix the situation, and hopefully make a new friend! I thank you Daniela for being so relaxed with me and being way too kind... I really appreciate a truly great person like you in the world. Ill make a cake for you anytime!

The final order of the weekend was my favorite one to create. It was a Cookie Monster cake and cupcakes! I was laughing and enjoying every minute of this fun creation. Stephanie wanted a fun cookie monster cake for her one year old son including cupcakes as favors. I think you just need to see how this one turned out, I think you will laugh just as hard as I did when I was done with it:

Now you know why I just couldn't stop laughing when I was done with this one. Stephanie thank you for letting me have some fun with this one! I really have to say this was the first time I could step back and really want to eat my own creation! She also emailed me back and said: "Everyone loved the cake and the cupcakes. Thanks again for a beautiful cake and cupcakes! You're awesome. Stephanie" No thank you Stephanie for letting me laugh a little, and create something fun for once... not to mention the left over cookies... my husband thanks you for that!

Overall, the weekend was a building block (lol) to new ideas, new cakes, and a lot of learning! Thanks you to everyone who helped me through this... Thank you!!!!

Halloween Already?

Wow, this year sure did fly by. It seems like yesterday (January) I was flying to Texas to see my fiancee graduate from boot camp, get married (same day), get promoted at work (May), have a wonderful birthday with the hubby home from tech school (June), big family wedding (June), move to Okinawa (June), get settled in in Okinawa (Aug.), and sell my first cake in Okinawa (Oct.). See as you read that sentence that's how fast it went by... I feel like I can't even say I was 22 because I blinked and I was 23. Wow... Halloween already?

Ok well, since its Halloween time I felt it only right to get started on those Halloween cakes. So here's the latest cake addition:

And so... whats the verdict? Do you like it? I've been researching this cake for about a week. I finally decided I would go for it. So, I created what i think is really an awesome cake. I feel like I worked harder on this cake then some in the past. I have to say it doesn't look challenging probably from your side of the computer but I sure had to work hard to get those roses to have two colors. I also worked hard to get that stem to look real. I also worked really hard on the leafs on the stem, those were fun! I tried to get those leafs to stand off the stem. They look as if they are blowing in the wind, wouldn't you agree?

Ok so would you take this little guy out of the pumpkin patch if you saw him sitting there all alone? I think I would! How about you?

More Suitcase Photos

Ok, so my wonderful sister-in-law sent me the photos from the Mitch and Janice goodbye suitcase cake party. These photos are awesome. I was so excited to get them. I couldn't have been happier with Mitch and Janice's response to the cake. They said it was moist and was really delicious! So, with that I give you:

Yes, this is Mitch having fun with the suitcase cake... he's pulling it! I love this, because this is what my cakes are all about. I love when my customers feel the cake is so realistic, or it surprises them because of the detail. I love this part of my job, the part where the customers love the cake so much... makes me happy!

Goodbye Suitcase

Ok, so this cake was a lot more fun then the last suitcase I did. This was a lot of work. It started out a little rough, only because I ran out of ink... Had to get more for the photos. Well, then once I did that, then the last layer of cake just seemed like it didn't want to bake all the way through. It baked an additional 20 minutes longer then the other two layers. In any case, I feel the cake still needed more work... but I guess I'll save that for next time!

Ok, so this cake was made for my sister-in-laws friends who are leaving Oki to head back to the states for their next duty station. All the stickers represent something, somewhere along their path together. The idea was to capture all their travels on a little suitcase, as if they have traveled with it along their journey. It was a lot of work, and a lot of time to do this little guy, but in the end I was glad to hear they all loved the cake.

Its really a fun cake, and I have attempted this suitcase style before, so if you really want to compare and see how far I have come, lets post that picture too!

Happy 21st Birthday

Hi all! Okay so this cake was for an order I had on October 1st! This was the first cake order I had here in Okinawa. (If you would like to see old ones I'll probably load a file up soon with them in it... but if not check out my website, I have all the orders from this past year and before on that site - link is in the last post).

Anyways I had a lot of fun jumping back into cake making after spending so much time away from it. (I recently moved from California, USA to Okinawa, Japan). This cake was for Raiza's boyfriend who was turning 21. If I'm correct they both are Marines, stationed here on Okinawa Island. Raiza was a wonderful customer. She told me exactly what she wanted! This always makes for an easy order (on my end). She wanted some very simple and clean, and to be honest it was a great way for me personally to get back into making the cakes again. in other words, nothing to complicated to start off my cake life here!

I just want to take a moment and thank Raiza for her order, and also I would like to post what she sent me after her boyfriend’s birthday party.

"HI..I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE CAKE...MY BF LOVED IT AND IT ONLY LASTED FOR ABOUT 20 MIN.EVERYONE AT KINSER PMO SAID IT WAS GREAT....THANKS, RAIZA"

This site will be all about the customers and my new life in Okinawa, Japan. I have been trying to make a bakery world for myself, and so far I am satisfied with what I've created. If you every feel the need to give me criticism about any of my cakes please do! I love real, honest feed back, but don't be mean to be mean... please.
